Milk Production Hits New Highs
According to county data, milk production rose from 128 million litres in 2023 to 134 million litres in 2024, marking a significant milestone for the local dairy sector.
This steady growth reflects sustained investments aimed at improving productivity and farmer incomes across the county.
Key Drivers Behind the Growth
Several targeted interventions have contributed to the impressive rise in milk output:
-
Breed improvement programmes to enhance milk yields per cow
-
Expanded pasture development, with improved fodder varieties boosting nutrition
-
Farmer training on modern dairy management and value addition
-
Enhanced veterinary services to improve animal health and reduce losses
These initiatives have strengthened productivity at the farm level while lowering production risks for smallholder farmers.
Pasture Expansion and Farmer Training
The county has increased land under improved pasture from 60 acres in 2024 to 80 acres in 2025, with plans to exceed 100 acres.
At the same time, over 10,000 farmers have been trained on sustainable livestock production, feed management, and dairy value addition.
Strengthening the Dairy Value Chain
To address post-harvest losses and market access challenges, the county plans to install milk cooling plants in key production zones.
This move is expected to improve milk quality, stabilize prices, and enhance farmer earnings.
Governor Muthomi Njuki has emphasized that dairy farming remains a critical pillar for food security, employment, and household income, especially for rural communities.
Economic Impact and Future Outlook
With consistent policy support and infrastructure investment, Tharaka Nithi is positioning itself as a leading milk-producing county in Kenya.
The focus going forward is on sustainability, value addition, and linking farmers to reliable markets.
As strategic investments continue, the dairy sector is expected to play an even bigger role in driving local economic growth and rural livelihoods.
