Prof. Kindiki, who also serves as the Deputy Party Leader of UDA, cast his vote at Irunduni Primary School alongside registered party members participating in the exercise.
The polls focused on electing officials at the polling-centre level, which forms the foundation of the party’s organisational structure.
UDA Grassroots Elections Explained
The grassroots elections were conducted simultaneously in 20 counties across Kenya as part of UDA’s nationwide internal electoral calendar.
At each polling centre, party members elected 20 officials tasked with coordinating party affairs, mobilising members, and relaying grassroots priorities to higher party organs.
This bottom-up approach is intended to ensure that leadership within the party reflects the will of ordinary members, reinforcing accountability and inclusivity in party governance.
Kindiki on Internal Party Democracy
After voting, Prof. Kindiki described the exercise as a clear demonstration of internal party democracy.
He said transparent and participatory processes are essential for building strong political institutions and promoting democratic culture in the country.
He emphasized that credible internal elections enhance unity, legitimacy, and public confidence, particularly for parties entrusted with national leadership responsibilities.
Next Phase of UDA Elections
The grassroots polls mark the first phase of UDA’s broader internal elections programme.
Over the next three months, the party is expected to roll out elections at the Ward, Constituency, and County levels.
The process will culminate in the election of national party office bearers in April 2026, completing the party’s leadership renewal cycle.
Why the Elections Matter
As Kenya’s ruling party, UDA’s internal electoral processes are closely observed by political analysts and the public.
Well-organised grassroots elections are widely regarded as indicators of party stability, organisational strength, and commitment to democratic principles.
Prof. Kindiki’s participation in the Tharaka-Nithi polls highlighted the leadership’s support for grassroots participation and reinforced the importance of inclusive decision-making in shaping the party’s future.
