Theme of 2026: Radio and AI

This year’s global theme, “Radio and AI”, sparked conversations about the intersection of technology and journalism.

Blaise Gitonga emphasized that while artificial intelligence is transforming media, it should serve as a complement rather than a replacement for traditional broadcasting.

“AI is a useful tool, but it must not replace media stations. Journalists should embrace it to enhance their work,” Gitonga stated.

He also cautioned against the misuse of AI to spread misinformation or hate speech, urging audiences to distinguish between authentic journalism and algorithm‑generated content.

Ethical Journalism in the Digital Era

Mary Gitonga highlighted the importance of accuracy and verification in reporting. With AI capable of distorting facts, she reminded listeners that ethical journalism remains the backbone of trustworthy media.

“Journalists must ensure accuracy and verification in the information they share,” she said.

Her remarks reinforced the need for professional standards in an era where unverified digital content can easily mislead.

Humanity and Neutrality in Reporting

Community member John Mbaabu praised the journalists’ charitable gesture, noting that radio reflects society by informing and connecting people.

He urged leaders to use radio responsibly to promote peace and development initiatives.

Mbaabu further reminded journalists to remain neutral and resist political manipulation, warning that biased reporting can erode public trust and harm social cohesion.

Global Significance of World Radio Day

Celebrated annually on February 13, World Radio Day recognizes radio as a platform that informs, educates, and unites communities worldwide.

The Tharaka Nithi celebrations demonstrated how local journalists can blend community service, ethical reflection, and technological awareness to honor the spirit of radio.
