Tharaka Nithi Girl Walks to School Empty-Handed, Wins Grade 10 Admission Through Determination

The learner, Scholastica Waruona, performed exceptionally well in the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), scoring an impressive 54 points.

Her strong results earned her an admission letter to Chogoria Girls High School, but poverty made it impossible for her to take up the opportunity.

Despite not receiving a calling letter from Materi Girls Secondary School, Scholastica chose to walk to the institution, seeing it as her only realistic option to continue her education, as the school is closer to her home.

Scholastica revealed that she has had to fend for herself throughout primary school while also caring for her mentally ill mother and her younger brother

To survive, she works on people’s farms, earning small wages to provide food and support her brother’s schooling.

“I studied through many challenges. I did menial jobs to pay for exams, and sometimes I stayed out of school for up to two weeks. Still, I managed to sit my Grade Nine exams and I passed,” she said.

On the day she walked to Materi Girls Secondary School, Scholastica left her mother and brother at home after giving them something to eat, uncertain whether they would manage to find another meal later in the day.

Despite the hardships she faces, the determined learner holds onto a powerful dream of becoming a doctor and transforming her family’s future.

“I promise to do my best and not disappoint those who will help me.

I will work hard so that I can come back and help my community and others who are like me,” she said.

Moved by her resilience and determination, the principal of Materi Girls Secondary School admitted Scholastica immediately and allowed her to begin learning as efforts to secure support got underway.

The school administration has since appealed to well-wishers and kind-hearted Kenyans to support Scholastica with school fees, uniforms, and basic necessities so she can complete her secondary education without interruption.

Her story stands as a powerful reminder that determination, resilience, and education can triumph even in the face of extreme hardship.
