Major Affordable Housing Projects Under Implementation
Tharaka Nithi County is currently implementing three major affordable housing projects: the Chuka Public Works Affordable Housing Project, Majira Affordable Housing Project, and Marimanti Affordable Housing Project. All developments are being executed under the State Department for Housing.
Chuka Public Works Affordable Housing Project
The Chuka project will deliver 385 housing units across multiple categories. Construction began in December 2024 and has reached approximately 30 percent completion.
Initial challenges, including the clearing of large trees, required extended site preparation. Despite this, construction has progressed steadily, injecting economic activity into Chuka town and surrounding areas.
Marimanti Affordable Housing Project
Located in Tharaka Constituency, the Marimanti project commenced after site handover in November and currently stands at approximately four percent completion.
The project is expected to ease housing pressure while supporting planned urban development and local employment.
Majira Affordable Housing Project
The Majira project has completed the holding process, paving the way for full-scale construction. Once underway, it will expand the county’s affordable housing stock and create additional employment opportunities.
Employment Creation and Economic Empowerment
The affordable housing programme has generated employment for women, youth, and Jua Kali artisans. Small-scale traders have also benefited from increased activity around construction sites.
Boosting the Jua Kali Sector
Masons, carpenters, and welders have secured consistent work through the projects. Many artisans are registered with the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), enhancing professionalism and access to support programmes.
Youth Internships and Skills Development
Nationally, the government has absorbed 5,000 interns under the affordable housing programme. 63 internship slots have been allocated to Tharaka Nithi County.
Socio-Economic Impact on Local Communities
Income earned from the projects has enabled families to pay school fees, meet daily needs, and improve household wellbeing. The initiative continues to deliver long-term socio-economic benefits across the county.
Supporting the Kenya Kwanza Development Agenda
Affordable housing remains a core pillar of the Kenya Kwanza development agenda. Once completed, the projects will ease housing pressure and support sustainable urban growth in Tharaka Nithi County.
